Fall 2009 Ceramics Class (Open to All Levels)

Course Dates & Times

  • First 8 weeks: Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesday/Thursdays, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm, August 24 - October 15
    Beginning, intermediate, and advanced Wheel Throwing and/or Hand Building

  • Second 8 weeks: Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesday/Thursdays, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm, October 19 - December 10
    Beginning, intermediate, and advanced Wheel Throwing and/or Hand Building

  • Full 16 weeks: Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm, August 24 - December 10
    Beginning, intermediate, and advanced Wheel Throwing and/or Hand Building

  • Studio Access: Open studio times will be Monday-Thursday evenings 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Course Information
Wheel throwing will be focused on making ceramic objects using the potter’s wheel.  Beginners will begin with a cylinder, then move to a bowl form, continue with mugs, lidded jars, vases, and teapots based on skill of the individual.  Within this course students will learn how to mix clay, prepare clay for use, throw on the potters-wheel, glaze the work and much more. 

Hand building will be focused on creating hand-built sculptural ceramics.  We will learn a variety of techniques, which include coil, slab and pinch.  This class will be a combination of vessel and sculptural object making.  Within this course students will learn how to mix clay, prepare clay for use, make a structurally sound clay object, glaze the work and much more.

The Department of Art, Ceramic Studio is located on 326 Eastern Ave. parallel to Razorback and between Mitchell and Nettleship. This State of the Art, 8000 square foot studio, is fully equipped with:
  • Several large gas, electric, and atmospheric Kilns
  • many potters wheels
  • slab roller
  • extruders
  • clay mixers
  • ball mill sandblaster
  • full glaze supplies and area with walk in spray booth, and on and on.
Cost        
$320 for 8 weeks or $620 for 16 weeks that includes the lab fee and you buy your tools. Registration must be paid by the first day of the course.
